Suarez@elca.org
Academia Ecuménica de Liderazgo is designed to strengthen the ministerial capacity of Latino congregations by increasing the way to identify and train healthy leaders who will be equipped to serve their communities, with a clear denominational identity. This academy will focus on the formation of lay leaders with an emphasis on evangelistic mission that empowers them with the necessary tools to live their faith actively in the world. Each class is led by a group facilitator, using classes recorded online by people with experience in each field of mission.
Academia Ecuménica de Liderazgo began as a Lutheran effort first and was called the ELCA Latin Lutheran Academy. Due to the interest of the Episcopalians, followed by the Methodists, we chose to use an ecumenical name, since we seek the expansion of the Kingdom of God in its different ecclesial expressions. Since 2013, the classes have been hosted at https://waytolead.org/, This year, 2018, the courses have been transitioned to https://www.selectlearning.org/ and we are reactivating the training of facilitators.
Frequent questions
What is the objective?
The objective is to have a basic education for lay people who can support their pastoral leaders in a more informed way, but NOT at a bachelor's or master's level. In fact, we do not want to grant any academic accreditation, only a certificate of participation. The point is that we have many churches where their lay leaders know very little about the church. At the end of the first year, there will be better catechists, leaders of prayer groups, liturgists to train others, preachers and evangelists, and in some cases, they will feel the call, and we will guide them if they wish to continue advanced theology studies for ordination. The first year is more about how to help within the conventional church. For the second year, we will focus on the integral care of the person as a leader, leadership skills, mission development, ecumenism, social justice and more.
A dynamic hybrid learning model is used, with face-to-face class gatherings and full online videos during the class. All courses can be registered for at www.selectlearning.org. The facilitator and students will be given access to the video material with a website address, username, and password that will be in effect for 3 months. These will be emailed to the facilitator just before the class is to start. The students do not have to go online if they do not wish. The full video will be watched in class. However, if students wish to review the video they can do so.
The guides and bibliography and other materials are available in the online class site. We are using this hybrid model because we have discovered on the one hand that a strictly online class requires and exceptional amount of discipline from the student, and on the other a guest teacher is very expensive and is only available for one class—not providing continuity with the group. With this model, the group discussions of the material can be analyzed according to each context, and the pastors or group leaders can focus on being discussion facilitators and critical thinking promoters, rather than presenters. Each class has approximately 4 hours of lecture divided into half hour segments. There will be facilitated discussion time at the end of each segment. In total there will be 8 hours of class in group and 4 hours of practice (recommended) and students will leave with 12 hours of preparation in each subject. So far, the classes have been videotaped, as professionally as possible, by mostly Lutheran instructors.
The cost?
The development cost of the classes is large, and we depend on the denominations to finance them, but we want the classes to be as accessible as possible to the students. For this year, 2018, thanks to a special subsidy, we will not be charging for online courses, to make them even more accessible to students and congregations.
These learning groups can be developed anywhere in any country that has access to the internet. We can train a group of initial facilitators and the rest is multiplication of leadership.
The facilitators will have the codes for each class, which you will receive upon registration. If you want to be a facilitator, or for more information you can contact Deacon Aura Suárez at Aura.Suarez@elca.org

Click on the links to be taken to each resource’s video sessions. Click on a session to stream.
Streaming the resources is quick and easy when you have fast Internet. Recognizing that some churches do not have fast or consistent Internet, your purchase does include the option of downloading. To download you will need good Internet connection, time, and storage space on your computer. Once downloaded the sessions can be played without worry about Internet signal.
When you are at a video session there will be a ‘download’ link on the lower left of the video box. You will need to right click that link and choose ‘save link as’ in order to start the download process. This is true for both Mac and PC. Depending on your Internet and browser this process can take minutes to hours. You may need to experiment to see which video player works with your computer and the Internet browser you are using. If you are having difficulty with a media player, VLC is a free resource that works across all platforms. (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)
