Who can enroll in Select Learning courses?
Our courses are designed for everyone—laypeople, congregational leaders, and ministry professionals. While we are a member of the ELCA network, we welcome ecumenical partners and individuals from all denominations seeking deep theological exploration.
Do I need a specific degree to take these courses?
No. Select Learning is dedicated to making high-quality theological education accessible. There are no formal prerequisites for most of our courses, making them ideal for personal growth or congregational leadership training.
How is the course content delivered?
We use a flexible online learning model. Content is delivered through high-quality video lectures (available via online streaming or DVD), paired with proven textbooks and customized study guides, and supplemented by structured online discussions.
Can these courses be used for ministry certification?
Yes. Our curriculum is specifically designed to meet the requirements for Synod Authorized Ministry (SAM) and other lay leadership programs within the ELCA and its partners. Because requirements may vary, we recommend checking with your Synod to confirm local requirements. If your Synod does not currently work with Select Learning, please contact us and we can help establish that connection.
What is the typical weekly time commitment?
Most students spend between 5 to 8 hours per week on a course. This includes watching the lectures, completing the required readings, and participating in the online discussion forums according to the weekly pattern.
Are the courses self-paced or scheduled?
While you can watch videos at your own convenience, our online courses follow a “Weekly Pattern” to facilitate community discussion. This ensures you are learning alongside others and engaging in meaningful dialogue.
